Thomas Tuchel has left Kobbie Mainoo out of England’s November squad, linking the decision partly to Manchester United’s poor run. Marcus Rashford is injured.

Manchester United’s poor start to the season has begun to shape the England conversation around Kobbie Mainoo. Thomas Tuchel left the midfielder out of his November squad, saying United’s dip in performance had contributed to the decision. Marcus Rashford also misses the international window while recovering from a hip problem, leaving United without a senior England representative. That’s a notable shift for a club whose players have often featured prominently in the national setup, though selection remains a judgment about the squad’s immediate needs as well as individual reputation.
Mainoo faces a fresh test for England selection
Mainoo’s omission carries added weight because Tuchel had publicly apologized for not giving him a minute at the World Cup and had said he hoped to include him in autumn Nations League matches. Mainoo was selected for that World Cup squad, then withdrew from England’s previous group with an unspecified injury. Sky Sports reported that he was the only outfield player in the squad who did not play. That sequence leaves his international standing harder to read: he’s been trusted with a place, but hasn’t yet had a sustained run of minutes to turn that trust into a settled role.
Asked about the latest decision, Tuchel cited both fitness and United’s form: “He was injured then Man United fell off a cliff a little bit performance-wise,” he said. United had collected seven points from their first nine league games, leaving them in the bottom half of the table. For Mainoo, a return to full fitness and stronger club performances now look closely tied to his next England opportunity. The link makes practical sense: national coaches often have limited time to assess players, and a midfielder’s club form can offer a useful indication of readiness. Still, one poor team run doesn’t settle the question of Mainoo’s ability; it does make the case for selecting him less immediate.
Tuchel has called up Borussia Dortmund’s Jobe Bellingham and Fulham’s Josh King for their first senior England squads, following their progression from the under-21s. Cole Palmer and Phil Foden are also absent. The rest of the group is largely unchanged from October. Those first call-ups point to Tuchel widening his options while keeping much of the existing group in place. The numbers here are underwhelming for United: no senior England selection in this window, despite Mainoo’s recent prominence and Rashford’s established profile.
England’s November fixtures carry quarter-final stakes
The Football Association announced the squad on 6 November for matches against Croatia and Spain. England host Croatia at Wembley at 7.45pm GMT on Thursday 12 November, then travel to Madrid to play Spain at the Metropolitano Stadium on Sunday 15 November. The international window runs from 9 to 17 November. The schedule gives England a home fixture followed quickly by a demanding away test, leaving little room for the squad to treat either match as routine. Here’s the thing: the selection choices will be judged against results, not just the promise of players who weren’t included.
England sit second in League A Group 3 on nine points after four matches, with a goal difference of +11. Spain lead on 12 points; Croatia have three, while Czechia have none. Avoiding defeat against Croatia would secure England a place in the quarter-finals. That makes the Wembley match a clear opportunity to settle qualification before the trip to Spain, though the table also gives the away fixture its own significance in the group race. A strong goal difference helps explain England’s position, but the points total is what determines whether the quarter-final place is secured.
Harry Kane matched Peter Shilton’s England record of 125 caps in the previous window and could claim it outright if he plays. That milestone gives the November squad a personal landmark alongside its group objective. Kane’s appearance would add another chapter to an already established record, but the immediate measure for England is more straightforward: secure the result against Croatia and carry that position into the Spain match.
Rashford remains at Carrington during the break
Rashford’s hip issue has kept him out of United’s recent matches. He joins Bukayo Saka and Alex Scott among the injured players who will miss the England fixtures. The break gives Mainoo time to build fitness after his recent return from injury, while Rashford can continue his recovery. Neither will add international minutes this month. For Rashford, the absence means the club break becomes a recovery period rather than an opportunity to regain rhythm with England. For Mainoo, it creates space to work on fitness, but there’s no guarantee that time away from the squad will alter Tuchel’s next assessment.
Sports Mole lists Rashford as unavailable for United’s match against Aston Villa and gives 22 November, away to Liverpool, as a possible return date. That date is a reported possibility, not confirmation that he’ll be ready. Hip problems can make a player’s return dependent on how recovery progresses, and the available information doesn’t establish a firm timetable. If you’re working in this space, the distinction matters: a projected return can help frame expectations, but it shouldn’t be mistaken for a confirmed team selection.
What the omissions mean for United and England
Mainoo’s case is more significant than it looks. His omission reflects a combination of injury interruption and United’s early league results, while the first senior call-ups for Bellingham and King show that Tuchel is also considering players moving up from the under-21s. Those are different selection stories, but they meet in the same practical question: which players can help England in the next two fixtures? Mainoo’s route back is clear in outline—regain fitness and make a stronger case through club performances—but the timing remains uncertain.
And yet, this squad announcement doesn’t settle Mainoo’s longer-term place. It records Tuchel’s choices for one window, with Palmer and Foden also absent and much of the October group retained. The next assessment will depend on circumstances the announcement can’t resolve, including fitness and form. A pause in selection. That’s the immediate reality for Mainoo and Rashford alike: both remain outside England’s plans for these matches, and both will need to wait for another opening.
