Kobbie Mainoo is back in training and could face Chelsea after missing four games. His return offers Michael Carrick a midfield option amid United’s winless run.

Kobbie Mainoo Returns to Training Ahead of Manchester United’s Chelsea Match

Kobbie Mainoo’s return to training gives Michael Carrick another midfield option before Manchester United visit Chelsea on Saturday. That’s useful at a time when United have gone eight games without a win in all competitions and Benjamin Šeško is expected to miss the rest of the year. The update offers some relief, but it doesn’t yet tell us whether Mainoo is ready to play.

Carrick said Mainoo had completed a small amount of training and rejoined the group. The midfielder has missed four matches with a muscle injury, and Carrick hasn’t ruled out including him in the squad for Stamford Bridge. A place in the squad would be a step forward; it wouldn’t necessarily mean he can handle a full match.

A winless run without Mainoo

Mainoo’s last appearance came in the 1-1 draw with Tottenham on 10 October. Spurs were down to 10 men but scored an added-time equaliser, turning what might have been a United win into another frustrating result. United haven’t won since. That sequence makes his absence part of a wider selection problem, though it doesn’t establish that his availability alone would have changed the team’s fortunes.

United lost 2-0 to Atlético de Madrid in the Champions League on 13 October, drew 1-1 at Leeds five days later and then suffered a 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como on 21 October. They also failed to beat Bournemouth. The pattern is damaging because it combines dropped points with a heavy defeat, leaving Carrick with little room to treat any one match as an isolated setback.

Carrick left captain Bruno Fernandes out against Bournemouth after Fernandes criticised the team’s tactics following the Como defeat. Mainoo’s availability would give Carrick another option in central midfield as he manages a difficult stretch of results. The timing matters: a coach facing questions about tactics and selection needs alternatives, even if a returning player’s fitness remains uncertain.

Šeško absence adds to selection pressure

The update on Mainoo came as Šeško’s prolonged absence was confirmed. The striker has a shin problem and is expected to miss the remainder of the year, with a return potentially delayed until January, Yahoo Sports reported. He hasn’t played since the Carabao Cup match against Brighton on 16 September, so his absence is already a sustained issue rather than a short interruption.

Manuel Ugarte, Luke Shaw and Patrick Dorgu are also unavailable for the Chelsea trip. In that context, even a limited return to training gives Carrick another selection possibility. It’s a narrow gain against a broader list of absences, but squad depth is often tested precisely when several players are unavailable at once.

What Mainoo’s return could mean

This is more significant than it looks, though the practical value depends on how quickly Mainoo can return to match fitness. Training with the group gives Carrick a chance to assess him alongside teammates, while the cautious description of the session leaves open how much work he has completed. If you’re working out what the update means for Saturday, the key distinction is between being available for selection and being ready to influence the match.

(And this is the part most people overlook.) Returning players can expand a manager’s choices before they’re ready to solve a team’s problems. Carrick may be able to name Mainoo, but the update doesn’t confirm that he’ll start, how many minutes he could play or whether he can sustain the demands of the match. A squad place would still give United more flexibility in midfield.

Mainoo has split his four career meetings with Chelsea, winning two and losing two. His latest visit to Stamford Bridge ended in a 1-0 United win in April 2026, when he played the full match. That history offers a point of reference, but it can’t settle the question of his current condition. Saturday’s fixture will show whether his return to training can translate into minutes against Chelsea.

For Carrick, the immediate task is to balance the need for options against the risk of expecting too much from a player returning from injury. One more choice. For United, a win would matter more than the availability update; after eight games without one, the result is the test that will define this trip.
