Atletico Madrid Set Aside €25m Option for Jonathan David

Jonathan David’s first four LaLiga appearances have put Atletico Madrid’s reported plans to keep him in sharper focus. The Juventus loanee has contributed to a goal in every match, and Relevo reports that Atletico have set aside €25 million to make his move permanent after the 2026-27 season. Four games are a small sample, but a direct contribution in each one gives the club an immediate reason to assess how well he fits its attack.

That budget allocation signals intent, but it isn’t a completed transfer. David remains on loan, and Atletico haven’t announced that they’ll trigger the purchase option. The club may also try to negotiate the price with Juventus, according to the report relayed by Football Italia and Gazeta Express. Those details matter: a planned allocation can show that a club is preparing for a possible cost, while the decision to commit depends on the player’s continued performance and the terms both sides ultimately accept.

A sharper start in Spain

David, 26, joined Juventus on a free transfer from Lille and spent one season in Serie A, where he recorded six goals and four assists. His early numbers in Madrid are stronger: three goals and two assists in his first four league appearances. He needed 19 Serie A matches to reach that combined total. The comparison is striking, though it describes two short stretches in different teams and leagues rather than proving that one setting has permanently changed his level.

For Atletico, the useful question is what sits behind the production. Goals and assists offer a clear snapshot of a forward’s output, but they don’t by themselves explain how he’s contributing to the team, how sustainable the run might be, or what role the coaching staff expects him to hold. Four appearances can make a strong first impression. They’re less able to settle a longer-term evaluation.

The contrast gives Atletico a strong reason to consider retaining him, while leaving Juventus with an increasingly concrete question about its forward plans. David arrived in Turin from Lille without a transfer fee; a €25 million sale would give the club a defined return, but only if Atletico complete the deal. That’s a meaningful difference between a possible outcome and money Juventus can plan around today.

Juventus’ striker planning around David’s future hinges on how the loan develops and whether Atletico follow through. A sale would give the Italian club a known fee to work with, while David’s return would leave it to reassess his place in the squad and its forward options. The report doesn’t say how Juventus would use any proceeds or what alternatives it might consider, so those decisions remain open.

The option still needs to be triggered

Relevo’s report says Atletico have included the option amount in next season’s budget and are looking toward the end of the 2026-27 campaign to settle David’s future. The figure gives both clubs a reference point, though talks could produce different terms. That makes the reported €25 million a useful marker, not a guaranteed final price or confirmation that a deal will happen.

There’s a practical distinction here. Setting aside a sum suggests Atletico are accounting for the possibility of a purchase; triggering an option would turn that possibility into a decision. Until the club makes that choice, the loan keeps the arrangement provisional. (And this is the part most people overlook.) A budget line can prepare a club for a transfer without answering whether the player’s performances, role and cost will still make sense when the decision arrives.

That uncertainty cuts both ways. Atletico can continue to assess David as the season develops, while Juventus has to consider more than a headline fee: the timing and certainty of the outcome affect its own planning. Neither side’s next step is established by the report. The shape of the agreement gives each club a framework, but the final decision will depend on what happens during the loan and any negotiations over the price.

What David’s start could mean

This is more significant than it looks for a loan that’s still in its early phase. David’s immediate output has made the purchase option a live subject rather than a distant clause, and Atletico’s reported budget suggests the club is taking that possibility seriously. But a strong opening run and a financial allocation are two separate signals. Neither, on its own, guarantees a permanent move.

If you’re working in this space, the useful indicators to watch are the ones the report leaves unresolved: whether David maintains his contribution, whether Atletico decide to trigger the option, and whether the clubs agree on terms. The first four appearances provide evidence of a productive start. The next stages will show whether Atletico views that start as a basis for committing to him beyond the loan.

For now, his form is the clearest signal. If David keeps producing in Madrid, Atletico’s reported willingness to budget for the option could turn into a permanent move—and give Juventus a firmer basis for planning its next centre-forward decision. If the club doesn’t proceed, the same figures will remain a promising run rather than a completed transfer. A strong start. Still an open decision.
