Newcastle Jets served as the foundational stage for Eli Adams, whose talent has propelled him to Gamba Osaka, a prominent figure in Japanese football. As he steps back into familiar territory for the Asian Champions League group stage, Adams is keen to showcase what the Jets might be missing, particularly to head coach Mark Milligan.

Now 24, Adams departed Australia donning an A-League Premiership medal and a hefty record of goals and assists, which cemented his connection with the McDonald Jones Stadium crowd. Yet, nostalgia isn’t at the forefront of his thoughts; instead, he’s focused on leveraging this environment to earn more playing time under Gamba’s coach, Tomokazu Myojin.

Since joining the two-time J1 League champions in July, Adams has played only 262 minutes in eight appearances, a situation he aims to change. He’s anticipated to be part of the starting lineup against a revamped Jets team still reeling from a 7-1 defeat to Kashima Antlers.

“Newcastle was like a second home to me; everyone was fantastic there,” Adams shared in an interview with Football360. “Playing in front of those fans was special, and my two years there were full of wonderful memories, including winning the Australia Cup.”

Adams recalled a standout moment from his Jets tenure, “My last goal in the A-League semi-final against Sydney was memorable.” He reflected on the crowd's reaction to his last-minute equalizer, a thrilling experience overshadowed by the subsequent penalty shootout loss. “Those memories are tough to replicate; the atmosphere was electric,” he added.

Adams is part of a broader movement as players pursue international careers. “Many seek opportunities abroad, and it’s fulfilling to see friends and acquaintances also find success,” he noted. With Milligan at the helm, he’s optimistic about the Jets’ potential despite the recent player departures, underscoring the strong signings and coaching acumen in place.

“Millsy understood me as a player and allowed me to shine,” Adams stated, reflecting on their productive relationship. “To thrive, you need to earn a coach's trust, which Millsy gave me the freedom to express myself.” His adaptability to the coach’s tactical directions was pivotal for his development.

Transitioning to the J1 League has presented Adams with new challenges. He shared that an early pre-season injury hampered his initial progress. “It’s been an incredible journey so far. I expected a tactical league, but I found it just as fast and physical. The strength of players here is surprising,” he confessed.

“The experience I’m gaining is invaluable; adapting to this style will prove beneficial,” Adams added, emphasizing that nothing compares to match intensity. His commitment is clear: “My goal is to improve continuously and prove to the coach I deserve a spot on the pitch.” Being part of Gamba Osaka, a club with high expectations, is an exciting challenge for him.

Though it's uncertain when he’ll get his chance with the Socceroos, Adams' involvement in the national team’s recent camp illustrates the level of respect he’s garnered, particularly from a coach who earlier had limited use for him. “Did the call-up surprise me? Yes and no; it’s something I’ve aimed for,” he replied. “Always believing in myself is vital.”

He’s keen to seize every opportunity to demonstrate his skills, “The morale among the team is encouraging. We’re aiming high with the upcoming Asian Cup and future competitions.” his enthusiasm was palpable as he discussed the blend of young talent and experienced players in the camp.

Whether Adams can establish a reputation adorned with the green and gold remains uncertain, but what’s clear is his approach. “Players who create memorable moments are those willing to take risks,” he stated. “Fortune favors the brave.”

Kick-off for the Jets vs. Gamba Osaka match is set for 6.45pm AEDT.
